WHAT WE OFFER YOU
The course offers you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with University life. You will have close contact with lecturers and tutors from the School of Accountancy. This will enable you to get to know them personally.
The course provides intensive lectures and tutorials specifically designed to assist students to cope with first year accountancy.
The career focus exposes you to the main players in the accountancy profession and financial world. You will have the chance to meet prospective employers and talk about bursaries, vacation employment and career prospects.
Daily participation in sporting and social activities is encouraged.

OBJECTIVES
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE To bridge the gap between school and university for students intending to study accounting at university.
SECONDARY OBJECTIVES The school is divided into two groups:
- One class for students who have not studied accounting at NSC level.
- One class for students who have studied accounting at NSC level.
Each group has a different secondary objective : For students who have not studied Accounting at NSC level, we aim to:
- introduce you to the basic concepts of the accounting conceptual framework
- teach you how to analyse transactions
- teach you to record transactions in a journal, post to a ledger and prepare financial statements.
For students who have studied Accounting at NSC level, we aim to:
- integrate the accounting knowledge you were taught at school with that which you will learn at university
- give you a deeper, more conceptual insight into the topics already taught at school
- enable you to benefit from your school accounting knowledge and to use it advantageously at university.

LECTURERS AND TUTORS
Lecturers
- Andrew Jones (MCom) and Yaeesh Yasseen (MCom)
- Both are highly motivated, dynamic and enthusiastic lecturers who are involved in co-ordinating and presenting Accounting courses at the University of the Witwatersrand
Tutors
- The tutors are all Wits BAccSc or BCom graduates and/or senior BAccSc or BCom students
- They have all had experience in tutoring first year students

COURSE STRUCTURE
The course structure comprises two lectures of 45 minutes duration per day and a small group tutorial session of 120 minute duration :

- Lectures consist of presentations by the lecturers where students will be guided through the course material
- Tutorials focus on the practical application of accounting theory and principles under the supervision of the tutors

REGISTRATION
Registration will take place on Monday 23 January 2012, from 06h30 in the foyer of the School of Accountancy Building (First National Building), West Campus. Late applications will be accepted at registration, but it is preferable to book your place early.
