Quick statistics about Wits

The University of the Witwatersrand is a research-intensive public higher education institution in South Africa that competes globally and acts locally. Student numbers by Race

Wits University’s 2018 Annual Report reflects our latest student numbers at 39 953, with black students - which includes African, Chinese, Indians and Coloureds – making up 82.94% of the student community, and white students making up 16.93%.

Student numbers by gender

Wits female students make up 54.64% and male students 45.34%. Many female students take up studies in the Humanities, Health Sciences and Commerce and Law Faculties. Male students make up the majority in the Science and Engineering and Built Environment Faculties.
