The School of Geosciences, part of the Faculty of Science at Johannesburg’s University of the Witwatersrand, is the largest and most diverse academic Earth Science institution in Africa.
It offers undergraduate degrees including a BSc in Geology, Honours degrees in Geology, Geochemistry, Geophysics and Palaeontology, and higher postgraduate degrees. Education programmes also extend into Geology, Palaeontology, Palaeoanthropology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Geochronology, Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science, Hydrogeology, Economic Geology, and Exploration and Mining Geoscience. The School enrolls 232 Undergraduate, 35 Honours, and 115 postgraduate students (Feb 2011).
Wits’ School of Geosciences combines a rich teaching tradition with a strong research base. It is the main (and in some cases, sole) centre of study in Africa and South Africa for a number of fields. The School is proud of the fact that Wits Geoscience graduates are equipped for many careers in diverse fields, and are sought-after in the international mining and minerals industries, research institutes, government and in environmental organisations.
The School has a range of analytical facilities and holds a number of major fossil and mineral collections, with displays in two museums, the Bleloch Geological Museum and the James Kitching Museum.
