The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund^®

The MMMF was founded in 1981 to honor the memory of Margaret Craig McNamara for her commitment to women and children in the developing world. Over the past 31 years, the MMMF has awarded 205 educational grants to women from 65 developing countries whose studies in the US, Canada and also now in South Africa since 2007, aim to benefit women and children and plan to return to their countries or regions.

The Washington Centre - The Ford Motor Company Global Scholars Program

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Are you interested in receiving a scholarship to study and complete an internship in the U.S.from September to December 2012

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (TWC) located in Washington D.C. is offering ten (10) scholarships sponsored by The Ford Motor Company Foundation, to the best students from Brazil, China, India, Russia and South Africa, to participate in The Ford Motor Company Global Scholars Program.

The scholarship covers most of the expenses including: application, program and housing fees, plus contribution toward health insurance coverage and SEVIS fee payment for J-1 Visa.

Program Dates: The program begins on August 29^th until December 15^th, 2012

Program Components

The program has the following components:

Internship: student will be placed in an internship with an organization that fits their interests and skills. Students will intern four days a week.
Academic Course: student will complete an academic course. TWC’s faculty includes adjunct professors from local universities including Georgetown and Johns Hopkins University, among others.
Monday Programming: student will attend a series of events with experts and leaders from the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. They will also complete a civic engagement project.
Portfolio: student will produce a compilation of documents that chronicles and summarizes your learning experience during your time with The Washington Center.

SKILL Programme

Complete master’s degree: APPLY NOW!

This part of the SKILL programme is available for junior university staff of Historically Disadvantaged Groups who have not yet obtained their master’s degree and offers the opportunity to do so in the Netherlands.

The SKILL programme offers funding for travel to the Netherlands, accommodation, insurance, the tuition fee and a modest living allowance. In addition, the programme offers funding for the replacement at the South African university!

The master’s degree may be in any academic field, there are no restrictions on this point. The only requirements regarding the master are the entry requirements set by the Dutch university offering the master’s degree.

This opportunity is open only for South African nationals!

A successful application with a Dutch university can only be accepted for the SKILL programme provided replacement at the South African university is arranged! This replacement cannot be filled by a current colleague, the replacement must be filled by someone liaised to the faculty solely for that purpose.

The application deadline at ISS is: 1 June 2012.

The deadline at UNESCO-IHE is: 1 July 2012.

As the number of places on offer is limited and the application procedure may take some time, we would kindly like to ask you to encourage possible candidates to apply as soon as possible!

Short courses: call for applications

Experience student life in the Netherlands while developing your academic skills!

The Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam (ISS)and UNESCO-IHE also offer short courses of up to three months to South African master’s students.

Application is now open for courses starting in September, October and November 2012!

Applications deadline is June 1^st for courses at ISS and UNESCO-IHE!

Courses offered are in the fields of Water and Water Management, Agriculture, Finance and Accounting and Transport and Logistics.

Applications are also open for short courses at Wageningen University and Research Center (deadline 15 May), Delft University of Technology (applications only for periods 2 and later), Maastricht University (deadline 22 May) and VU University Amsterdam (deadline 22 May). For the specific courses, please take a look here. (Also for the courses of ISS and UNESCO-IHE.) The deadlines mentioned are applicable for courses offered in academic period 1. Courses in later periods can be applied for beyond the mentioned deadlines.

The SKILL bursary covers: plane ticket, accommodation, visa, insurance, modest living allowance and tuition fee.

Initiative Southern Africa” (INISA) Student Grant 2012

The “Initiative Southern Africa” (INISA) – a German NGO – offers a grant for undergraduate students from Universities and other tertiary education institutions in countries of the SADC region. The INISA grant covers 75% of tuition fees and related costs (e.g. books and other study material; residence fees etc.) for the academic year of 2012 up to a maximum amount of Euro 1,800.00 (or the equivalent in local currency).

Scholarship from African Safari Consultants

African Safari Consultants have recently launched a small scholarship whereby they will financially assist an inbound American student studying abroad at an African University during the 2012-2013 Academic year. The student may be either under or postgraduate; must be registered at an accredited American university or college; and must be pursuing studies in either an environmental or anthropological field. Erasmus Mundus Action 2 fosters institutional co-operation in the field of higher education between the European Union and third countries through a mobility scheme addressing student and academic exchanges for studying, teaching, training and research.

The Erasmus Mundus Action 2 network ema2sa ‘Erasmus Mundus Action 2 for South Africa’ is co-ordinated by the University of Leuven. As part of Target Group 2 (non-partner university), South African nationals studying towards a Master’s or PhD at Wits may apply for a mobility scholarship at one of the seven European partner universities:

MICROSOFT RESEARCH PhD SCHOLARSHIP 2012

The programme is open to all universities or national research institutions in any country in Europe, the Middle East or Africa.

As previous years, applications must be made by PhD supervisors not by students. Supervisors will be informed of our decision in January 2012 and will then have up to one year to find the best student for the proposed project. Students will typically start their PhD in October 2012.

Call for Applications for the DAAD Masters in Public Policy and Good Governance

This programme is designed to further qualify future leaders in politics, law, economics and administration according to the principles of Good Governance and to prepare them in a praxis-oriented course for their professional life. The programme offers very good graduates with a first university degree the chance to obtain a Master’s degree in disciplines that are of special relevance for the social, political and economic development of their home country. With the knowledge and experience acquired in Germany, the scholarship holders should later contribute to the establishment of democratically oriented economic and social systems aimed at overcoming social tensions.

The majority of the courses are taught in English or partly in English.

The programme is aimed at first-class graduates with a university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) who want to contribute to the social and economic development of their home countries. The scholarships are offered both for young graduates without professional experience and for mid-career professionals.

The Beit Trust

The Beit Trust offers annually a small number of Scholarships abroad for postgraduate studies or research to graduates who are domiciled in Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe (the beneficial area). Scholarships are taken up at a university in the United Kingdom, Ireland or South Africa, for study in a subject of the individual’s choice appropriate to the needs of the beneficial area. Duration is normally for a maximum of three years at the discretion of Trustees. In addition, awards for a one-year taught Masters Degree are offered at the University of Leeds, known as the Beit-Leeds Scholarship (BL); at the University of Reading, known as the Beit-Reading Scholarship (BRG); and at Rhodes University, known as the Beit-Rhodes Scholarship (BRU).

BL Scholarship expenses are shared equally between The Beit Trust and the University of Leeds, which undertakes the administration.

BRG Scholarship expenses are shared between The Beit Trust and the University of Reading, which again undertakes the administration.

Some BRU Scholarship expenses are met by Rhodes University, but the Beit Trust handles the administration.

There is no academic difference between these shared scholarships and fully-funded scholarships. Many Beit Scholars choose these popular Africa-friendly universities where shared costs permit more scholarships to be offered to the beneficial area.

Please note that The Beit Trust is constrained by Act of Parliament to sponsoring ONLY students who are domiciled within Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe. The Trust cannot consider applications from those who have already commenced their course.

All applicants except medical and veterinary doctors must be under 30 years of age on 31 December of the year of application. Some experience of work after completion of a first degree is desirable. Doctors and vets must be under 35 years of age on 31 December and should have completed 18 months of internship and preferably a one-year rural posting in the relevant country.

The extent of a Beit Scholarship Grant is:

Fees and costs of tuition and related academic expenses are paid by the Trust direct to the universities.

Scholars receive a personal allowance, index linked in accordance with guidance from an independent authority covering maintenance support.

Other allowances are paid for arrival, a laptop and printing of a thesis, and return to Africa.

Economy Class air passages are met by the Trust for the initial journey to the place of study, and for the return at the end of the course.

No allowances are paid for spouses or other family members.

Initial applications for scholarships can be made online. The Application List for 2011 Scholarships has now closed and the list for 2012 will open in April 2011. Candidates are urged to complete the online form as early as possible in April to establish whether they would qualify. If you do qualify you will be required to provide additional information and details which form will be sent to you by the respective offices mentioned above. This information will include, but may not be restricted to, the following:-

A fuller application form
A medical certificate from your doctor
Names and addresses of 3 distinguished referees (who are willing to provide a reference) together with their e-mail addresses in order that we may contact them to take up their references
A certified transcript of your degree results
A certified document of evidence of residency (National Registration Card or birth certificate)

Please note that all original and certified documents must be received by The Beit Trust by 31 August 2011.

Only those applicants who state that they intend to return to work in the relevant country upon completion of the scholarship, and who can, if short-listed, present themselves for interview before a Beit Scholarship Selection Board in Harare, Blantyre or Lusaka towards the middle of December, will be considered.

Selection is highly competitive, and only postgraduates with at least a Merit (equivalent to a good 2.1 from a UK university) in their first degree are likely to succeed. The selectors favour practical and useful disciplines that are likely to offer a clear benefit to the beneficial area. Because of their high cost, MBAs and PhDs are very seldom awarded in the UK, but a taught MBA at the Universities of Cape Town is acceptable.

COSECSA

The Beit Trust has also set up a pilot scheme to sponsor Malawian, Zambian and Zimbabwean surgeons undertaking five-year courses at the College of Surgeons in East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA). Separate selection and sponsorship mechanisms apply.

Swiss South African Joint Research Programme (SSAJRP)

The Swiss South African Joint Research Programme (SSAJRP) is a bilateral research cooperation programme, established in 2007 by the Swiss and South African governments. Jointly funded by both governments, the programme aims at promoting scientific and technological cooperation between Switzerland and South Africa.

In South Africa, SSAJRP is governed by the Department of Science and Technology (www.dst.gov.za) and coordinated by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (www.csir.co.za). On the Swiss side, SSAJRP is administrated by the State Secretariat for Education and Research (www.sbf.admin.ch). The University of Basel (www.unibas.ch), as the Swiss Leading House for South Africa, and the Swiss Tropical Institute (www.sti.ch), as the Associated Leading House, jointly assume coordination and management responsibilities for Switzerland.

Under the programme 16 Joint Research Projects have been granted for the funding period 2008-2011 in the priority research areas Public Health & Biomedicine, Bio- & Nanotechnologies, and Human & Social Sciences. Currently the programme is providing funds for Student and Faculty Exchanges as networking instruments between Switzerland and South Africa (2009/2010).
